With regard to heparin treatment:
- the heparin group suffered non-significantly fewer deaths within 14 days:

- corresponding to 3 fewer deaths per 1000 patients
- the percentage dead or dependent at 6 months was identical in both groups, at 62.9%
- heparin treatment significantly reduced recurrent ischaemic events:

- heparin treatment resulted in more haemorrhagic strokes:
- 1.2% vs. 0.4%
- 1.2% vs. 0.4%
- 125000 IU bd resulted in significantly more transfused or fatal extracranial bleeds, more haemorrhagic strokes, and more deaths or non-fatal strokes within 14 days:
- 12.6% vs 10.8%
