A 18-month cohort study of patients following acute MI was undertaken at the University-affiliated cardiac hospital in Quebec. Patients were excluded from the study if an MI had occurred secondary to coronary surgery or angioplasty, or other serious illness.
This study revealed that in-hospital major depression and depressive symptoms were predictors of increased mortality rates. 20% of depressed patients died of cardiac causes during the 18-month period compared with 6.4% of the non-depressed patients.
