Aetiology
The aetiology of masses in the abdomen which cause distention is summarised by a renowned sequence of f's:
- fat
- faeces
- foetus
- flatus
- fluid (ascites)
In addition to this, distension may be caused by tumour, or more unusually, by specific organomegaly.
