Aetiology
These include:
- appendicitis
- mesenteric adenitis
- constipation
- gastroenteritis
- urinary tract infection
- lower lobe pneumonia
- intussusception
- volvulus
- diabetes
- acute pyelonephritis
- Henoch-Schonlein purpura
- hepatitis
- colic - in infants
- drugs eg salicylates, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, some antibiotics, imipramine, sodium valporate, iron preparations, some anticancer drugs.
Rarer causes include:
- lead poisoning
- sickle cell disease
- torsion of the ovary or testis
- acute porphyria
- pancreatitis
- primary peritonitis
- meningitis
- migraine
- peptic ulcer
- reflux oesophagitis
- hydronephrosis
- renal calculus
