Differential diagnosis
The differential diagnosis of acute pancreatitis includes:
- acute myocardial infarction
- cholangitis
- cholecystitis
- diabetic ketoacidosis
- gastric outlet obstruction
- intestinal infarction
- pancreatic cancer
- perforated peptic ulcer
Other causes of raised serum amylase are:
- renal failure
- macro-amylasaemia
- diseases of the salivary glands
- extra-pancreatic abdominal diseases associated with inflammation
- e.g. - acute appendicitis, cholecystitis, intestinal obstruction or ischemia, peptic ulcer, and gynaecological diseases
