The patient may appear well or show the stigmata of alcoholism e.g. hallucinations, convulsions, or tremor.

Examination usually reveals signs of chronic liver disease. There are often florid spider naevi. Dupuytren's contracture is related to the alcoholism and not to the cirrhosis. The hepato-renal syndrome is particularly common in alcoholics.
