Types of gallstone
Gallstones consist of cholesterol, pigment - which is calcium bilirubinate - and calcium carbonate.
Four types are recognised:
- pure cholesterol - accounting for 6% of stones
- mixed - accounting for 80%
- pigment - making up most of the last 14%
- calcium carbonate - very rare
