Trials have revealed that endoscopic healing occurred after 4 weeks in 57-74% of patients using omeprazole 20mg.

In patients treated with ranitidine 300mg endoscopic healing occurred in 27-43%.

The percentages for endoscopic healing after 8 weeks were 78-87% for omeprazole and 28-56% for treatment with ranitidine. The superiority of omeprazole over ranitidine is even greater with patients with severe oesophagitis.

Also, there was increased likelihood of sustained endoscopic remission, when the patient is given maintenance treated for a year after healing, with omeprazole 20mg daily (67%) compared with 10% for those patients treated with ranitidine 150mg twice daily.
