Imaging techniques provide useful information in disorders of the liver.

Techniques which are of particular importance include:

  • plain radiography:
    • 10% of gallstones are radio-opaque
    • some liver cysts calcify
    • air may be visible in the biliary tree or under the diaphragm
    • there may be a subphrenic collection of pus visible

  • contrast studies
  • ultrasound
  • CT and MRI
  • ERCP
  • angiography
  • isotope scans
