Other aetiologies
Lactose intolerance can result from almost any disorder causing mucosal injury with depletion of enteric lactase.
Possible causes include:
- postinfective diarrhoea
- inflammatory bowel disease
- cow's milk protein intolerance
- immunodeficiency states
- bacterial overgrowth secondary to an anatomical abnormality
