Lactose intolerance can result from almost any disorder causing mucosal injury with depletion of enteric lactase.

Possible causes include:

  • postinfective diarrhoea
  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • cow's milk protein intolerance
  • immunodeficiency states
  • bacterial overgrowth secondary to an anatomical abnormality
