Approximately 60% of large bowel obstructions are caused by an underlying colorectal malignancy (1)

  • colorectal malignancy together with diverticulitis this accounts for 90% of cases

Colonic volvulus is a rarer cause of obstruction. Sigmoid volvulus is more usually seen in frail or older patients. Caecal volvulus is more rare and more commonly seen in younger patients (1)
