Prognosis

Authoring team

More than 80% of lower GI bleeds will stop spontaneously, and overall mortality has been noted to be 2% to 4%. 75% of those presenting to hospitals will stabilise with only resuscitative measures, e.g. blood transfusion. (1)

In patients with hemodynamic instability, requiring more than six units of blood within 24 hours, or not responding to resuscitation attempts, emergency segmental resection or subtotal colectomy may be required (2)
