Infection
Thorough cleaning and application of local antibacterial agents may prevent clinically significant infection.
In patients who succumb the usual pathogens are:
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Proteus
- Klebsiella
- Gram negative bacilli
- streptococci
Fever, tachycardia or metabolic acidosis are suggestive of infection. The organism may be detected by culturing the wound or the blood.
Appropriate systemic antibiotic therapy is required.
