Improvement of mucosal resistance
Drugs designed to improve mucosal resistance include:
- sucralfate:
- a mixture of aluminium hydroxide and sulphated sucrose
- may protect the ulcer from acid-pepsin attack
- may reduce phenytoin absorption
- misoprostol:
- a prostaglandin analogue
- inhibits acid secretion in addition to protecting the mucosa
- used to prevent gastric ulceration in patients taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
