Aetiology
Causes include:
- swallowing of maternal blood by neonates
- duodenal ulcers - typically occuring in children just before puberty, but also secondary to a number of other stresses such as serious illness, burns or steriod treatment
- Mallory Weiss tear
- oesophageal varices
- bleeding diatheses
