Prognosis is worsened in:

  • girls
  • infants of less than 1.5 kg birth weight
  • onset early after birth
  • coagulation disorders
  • positive blood cultures
  • low platelet count

The acute mortality is 10%, but worsens to 25% if there is perforation.
