Methods of peritoneal dialysis differ by the frequency and duration of exchanges:

  • acute or temporary peritoneal dialysis - hourly exchanges

  • chronic peritoneal dialysis:

  • continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis - 3 to 4 exchanges per day

  • continuous cyclic peritoneal dialysis - a single exchange during the day plus 4-6 exchanges during the night using automatic equipment
