Peritoneal lavage
Peritoneal lavage, the washing out of the peritoneal cavity, has surgical applications that are both diagnostic, e.g. the detection of visceral injury following blunt abdominal trauma, and therapeutic, e.g. sterilization of the cavity after peritonitis.
