The pleural membranes develop from the lining of the pericardio-peritoneal canal from week 5 of life. Lung buds at the caudal end of the primitive trachea invaginate the membranes on each side giving rise to visceral pleura - the membrane nearest the ramifying lung tissue - and peritoneal pleura external to this.
