Elemental feed contains free amino acids as the nitrogen source. The fat content is low, and the main energy source is carbohydrate.

This sort of feed is indicated in patients who have problems with digestion or absorption; it can also be used in inflammatory bowel disease, particularly Crohn's.

One of the major difficulties is its unpalatability; for this reason it is often given by nasogastric tube overnight by pump.
