Protein-losing enteropathy describes a condition where a abnormal bowel mucosa allows increased protein loss.

Causes include:

  • with mucosal ulceration:
    • Crohn's disease
    • ulcerative colitis
    • tumours
    • Menetrier's disease
  • without mucosal ulceration:
    • coeliac disease
    • tropical sprue
    • villous adenoma of colon
    • fistulae
  • with lymphatic problems:
    • lymphoma
    • intestinal lymphangiectasia
