- a systematic review of 43 randomised controlled trials comparing PPIs and H2 antagonists in 7635 patients with erosive oesophagitis, concluded that proton pump inhibitors are more effective than H2 antagonists in the treatment of erosive oesophagitis
- there is also evidence that PPIs are more effective than H2 antagonists in relieving symptoms in patients with non-erosive oesophagitis
