The aetiology of retroperitoneal fibrosis is as follows:

  • unknown in the majority of cases

Associations:

  • drugs e.g. methysergide, bromocriptine, methyldopa, beta-blockers
  • carcinoid tumours
  • fibrotic diseases e.g. mediastinal fibrosis
  • sometimes associated with an inflammatory aortic aneurysm, e.g. chronic aortitis
  • there may be association with radiotherapy
