Long term drug side effects include:

  • adaptive changes: - beta-blockers and upregulation of beta adrenoceptors during therapy - tardive dyskinesia and dopamine antagonists
  • rebound phenomena: - sudden withdrawal - again, seen with beta blockers and corticosteroids - need to withdraw drug very slowly - 1mg at a time, once a month
  • other: - chloroquine in the retina, amiodarone and deposition of phospholipids in tissues
