Diarrhoea in tube feeding

Authoring team

Diarrhoea during tube feeding occurs as a result of intolerance to feed that has not been absorbed. The incidence of diarrhoea is reduced by:

  • using a small bore tube
  • using commercially prepared feeds
  • administration by continuous infusion with a pump

If the above are adhered to, the incidence of diarrhoea is said to be small.
