Cytology
Eosinophils have the following microscopic and ultrastructural features:
- 10-14 micrometers in diameter
- bilobed nucleus with chromatin dispersion similar to neutrophils: heterochromatin peripherally, euchromatin centrally
- numerous eosinophilic granules within the cytoplasm:
- these are large - 1 micrometer - lysosomes
- they are concentrated in cytoplasm; little room for other organelles
- contain the enzymes histaminase, arylsuphatase, peroxidase and phospholipase
