Causes of a low haptoglobin
Classically, a low haptoglobin concentration is indicative of intravascular haemolysis.
There are other causes of a low haptoglobin, these include:
- extravascular haemolysis - some free haemoglobin leaks from the phagocytic cells of the spleen
- chronic liver disease
- metastatic malignancy
- sepsis
