  • history of fits or psychiatric disturbance
  • history of epilepsy in a first-degree relative
  • severely impaired liver function
  • first trimester of pregnancy and during lactation
  • hypersensitivity to quinine

Note that pregnancy should be avoided for 3 months after stopping the drug.
