Change of environment

Authoring team

An abrupt change of environment can lead to an acute confusional state and behavioural disturbance in those who are near or beyond the borders of coping. Such a catastrophe may be provoked by:

  • moving from the familiarity of one's own home
  • admission to hospital
  • admission to a residential or nursing home

Where possible encourage staff to spend time calming and reassuring the patient and helping him or her acclimatise to the new environment rather than be too readt to prescribe tranquillisers.
