  • dose related: gastric irritation, nausea, postural tremor, involuntary movements, thrombocytopenia.

  • idiosyncratic: nausea, vomiting, anorexia, transient hair loss, impaired liver function leading rarely to liver failure.

  • long term: weight gain (females)

  • others: hyperammonaemia, ammenorrhoea, rashes, pancreatitis, leucopenia, red cell hypoplasia, in pregnant mothers - increased risk (x20) of infant with spina bifida
