Multiple aetiology of symptoms
Symptoms may have a different cause than would be expected in younger patients and there may be a number of possible causes for any given symptom.
For example, increased breathlessness in an elderly asthmatic may be due to cardiac failure, respiratory infection, or multiple emboli rather than simply to an exacerbation of the asthma.
