Clinical features of candidal vaginitis
The clinical features include:
- a common presentation is with irritation or itching in the vulvovaginal area
- may be worse premenstrually
- accompanying vaginal discharge
- dysuria and dyspareunia
- no increased frequency or urgency
- the glycosuria of pregnancy or diabetes mellitus is a risk factor for candidiasis
On examination:
- the vulva may be slightly reddened, oedematous and have a white discharge
- there may be white lumps adhering to the walls of the vagina that have a cottage cheese appearance
Candida may colonise the vulva and vagina without causing any symptoms.
