The uses of ergometrine include:

  • postpartum haemorrhage - contraction of the uterus results in compression of the spiral arteries and bleeding stops
  • following abortion and caesarian section

Ergometrine is NOT used:

  • to speed the delivery of a live child
  • to cause involution of the uterus
