Oral contraceptive pill and lactation

Authoring team

If non-hormonal means are inappropriate e.g. barrier methods, the progestogen-only contraceptive pill is preferred to its combined oestrogen-progestogen counterpart. This is because the oestrogen component of the pill suppresses milk production.

Reverting back to the combined pill is possible during weaning.
