Treatment
The treatment of acute promyelocytic leukaemia comprises:
- FFP and platelets to rectify the bleeding diathesis
- daunorubicin and cytarabine are the preferred cytotoxic agents
- ATRA during induction or maintenance improves outcome
- after four courses of chemotherapy, look for evidence of minimal residual disease (by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction search for PML/RAR in marrow aspirate); if present, proceed to bone marrow transplantation
