Aprotinin
Aprotinin is an enzyme which causes proteolysis of plasmin and kallikrein, so promoting haemostasis.
It is indicated for:
- patients undergoing open heart surgery with circulatory bypass where control of haemorrhage is vital
- hyperplasminaemia severe enough to promote massive haemorrhage e.g secondary to excessive thrombolytics
It is given by slow intravenous infusion or injection. Complications include hypersensitivity and local thrombophlebitis.
