Polycythaemia in neonates

Neonatal elevated blood erythrocyte concentration can have a variety of causes. Note that haematological values vary in a non-linear manner from birth to adulthood. A rough guide to normal values of haematocrit in the neonatal period is:

  • 1 day old : 0.55-0.65
  • 4 days old : 0.50-0.58
  • 2 weeks old : 0.50-0.55
