Treatment of the late stage

Authoring team

The 'burnt out' phase of primary erythrocytosis is indicated by:

  • anaemia
  • thrombocytopenia
  • increasing hepatosplenomegaly
  • fibrosis of the marrow
  • leucoerythroblastic features in the blood

This heralds progression of the disease to acute leukaemia with increasing blast counts in the blood, often myeloid. Standard acute leukaemic therapy may be offered.
