Fungal respiratory tract infections in AIDS

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia is the most common fungal lung infection in patients with AIDS.

  • it is one of the first HIV related clinical problems (1)

Other fungal lung infections are caused by:

  • Cryptococcus neoformans
  • Aspergillus fumigatus
    • although exposure to Aspergillus is common, Aspergillosis develops only in patients with prolonged severe immunosuppression (1)
  • Histoplasma capsulatum
