Azithromycin
The antibacterial activity of azithromycin is similar to that of erythromycin against Gram positive bacteria but it is more active than erythromycin against some Gram negative organisms.
Indications:
- respiratory tract infections
- otitis media
- skin and soft tissue infections
- uncomplicated genital chlamydial infections
Cautions:
- renal impairment
- pregnancy and lactation
Contra-indications:
- hepatic impairment
Side-effects:
- diarrhoea
- cholestatic jaundice if give for more than 14 days
- nausea and vomiting
Routes of administration:
- oral:
- capsules
- suspension
