Bacteroides fragilis
B. fragilis is a normal commensal in the human large intestine which may be pathogenic.
The mechanism of pathogenicity is that the organism has a mucopolysaccharide capsule that makes it resistant to phagocytosis. It also produces heparinase and beta- lactamases.
