Post-operative
Following prosthetic valve replacement:
- Early endocarditis, within 60 days of operation:
- Staph. epidermidis, more commonly } 50% of
- Staph. aureus } early cases
- Gram -ve bacilli
- Fungi
- Late endocarditis, after 60 days post-op.
- Strep. viridans - 40% of late cases
- Staphylococci - 30% of late cases
Other surgery:
Viridans streptococci are more common following dental procedures; and faecal streptococci, following genito-urinary surgery or catheterisation.
Organisms found later after invasive procedures more closely resemble the picture seen in older adults, with additionally, Candida and Aspergillus.
