Cross-reactivity (beta-lactams and penicillin)

Authoring team

The indicence of allergy to cephalosporins in patients with history of penicillin allergy is approximately 8% (1). However the data sheets recommend that cephalosporins are used only with extreme caution in patients with a known type I reaction to penicillin.

There appears to be cross-reactivity between penicillins and imipenem. There appears to be significant cross-reactivity between penicillins and monobactams.
