Initial investigations

Authoring team

These should include:

  • close monitoring of temperature
  • chest radiography - PA and left lateral views
  • urinalysis, microscopy, culture and sensitivity
  • full blood count, differential white cell count & examination of peripheral blood film
  • repeated blood cultures e.g. x3
  • culture of wounds, intravenous lines etc. possibly CSF
  • urea, creatinine, electrolytes, blood sugar
  • CPK and liver function tests
  • C-reactive protein, ESR and immunoglobulins
  • serum iron, transferrin and albumin levels
