Initial investigations
These should include:
- close monitoring of temperature
- chest radiography - PA and left lateral views
- urinalysis, microscopy, culture and sensitivity
- full blood count, differential white cell count & examination of peripheral blood film
- repeated blood cultures e.g. x3
- culture of wounds, intravenous lines etc. possibly CSF
- urea, creatinine, electrolytes, blood sugar
- CPK and liver function tests
- C-reactive protein, ESR and immunoglobulins
- serum iron, transferrin and albumin levels
