Most patients with this condition are under the age of 5.

The reported incidences of Kawasaki disease are:

  • 3 per 100 000 in the UK
  • 10 per 100 000 in the US
  • 85 per 100 000 in Japan

There is a male-to-female ratio of between 1.5 : 1 and 2 :1

  • incidence has a marked seasonality, with heightened incidence in winter and early spring in temperate climates and summer peaks in some Asian countries
  • approximately 75% of cases occurring in children under 5 years of age
  • a heightened incidence in people of Asian descent, both inside and outside Asia
  • rising incidence has been observed worldwide over time, perhaps due to heightened awareness and recognition of the disease
