Bone necrosis
Bone necrosis is caused by:
- increased intraosseous pressure
- stripping of the periostium
- vascular stasis
- thrombosis
- bacterial toxins
- damage from leucocytic enzymes
In the infant, the growth plate may be involved, resulting in shortening of the limb and/or deformity.
A sequestrum forms when a piece of necrotic bone detaches itself and floats off in a sea of pus.
