Bone necrosis

Authoring team

Bone necrosis is caused by:

  • increased intraosseous pressure
  • stripping of the periostium
  • vascular stasis
  • thrombosis
  • bacterial toxins
  • damage from leucocytic enzymes

In the infant, the growth plate may be involved, resulting in shortening of the limb and/or deformity.

A sequestrum forms when a piece of necrotic bone detaches itself and floats off in a sea of pus.
