Relapsing fever can be subdivided as follows:
- epidemic relapsing fever is caused by Borrelia recurrentis, which is borne by the human louse, Pediculus humanus
- endemic relapsing fever is caused by Borrelia duttoni, which is borne on the tick, Ornithodoros sp.
