Crural approach

Authoring team

The low approach to femoral hernia repair has the advantage that it is relatively easy to perform. Its disadvantage is that it gives poor access to strangulated hernias and in the obese. The management of a suspected strangulated hernia is dealt with in the submenu.

The steps in a low approach include:

  • incision
  • mobilization of sac
  • identification of femoral opening
  • inspection of sac contents
  • closure and excision of sac
  • repair of canal and closure
